TF Public Comment to Office of Science and Technology Policy
In June of 2023, the MLA/CCCC Task Force on AI and Writing (TFAI) prepared a submission in response to the Request for Information circulated by the White House through the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The administration requested feedback from groups to help guide the development of a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy. The TFAI submitted the following remarks. In this public statement, we
· Raise concerns about the impact of artificial
intelligence on students’ learning and the role of educators in preparing
citizens with the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary for
participation in democracy.
· Assert that generative AI tools should be
regulated in a way that safeguards and advances information integrity,
· Emphasize the role of literacy as essential to
equitable democratic participation and to providing students with the
educational experiences that will help them fully participate in and advance
democracy.
